The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad was chartered on April 22, 1833, to connect Port Lawrence (later named Toledo) with western Michigan. Later, as a part of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, the New York Central, the Penn Central and the Conrail systems, the railroad carried passengers until November 1956. Born in East Windsor, Conn., Jan 20, 1797; entered a store in New York, 1813 ; established as merchant in Genesco, N.Y., 1817; removed to Lockport, N.Y., 1828 ; was busy with milling; moved to Toledo, Ohio., 1828 ; improved the town; began Erie Kalamazoo R.R. Co., 1836 ; was almost ruined in financial crash, 1837 ; rallied again ; died in Toledo, Nov. 9, 1860. (from Biog.
